Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite is just a few kilometers before Kisoro town council. The magnificent safari lodge is spotted in the hazy hills. By design established on the shores of Lake Mutanda adjust to the Mushengero peninsular overlooking the prominent Virunga Volcanoes. The position of the lodge gives a chance to view the Nkuringo family of gorillas along with the Mgahinga Gorilla groups.
Around the Camp
The most exciting aspect about this camp is the Bafumbira with their local brew that tastes so sweet. They dress according to their culture and most of them have smoking pipes, this is just to keep them warm because of the changing weather. They are always carrying their luggage with a long stick for protection.
Accommodation is provided at the camp in our 6 room Virunga Terrace where toilet and bathroom facilities are shared (rooms are not en-suite). We also have two hand crafted luxury cottages with en-suite facilites. Each cottage has a private terrace with wonderful views.
There accommodation is excellent with self-contained tented rooms along with cottages. The fee usually includes breakfast and food for those who so wish to have it at the lodge.
By virtue of the altitude of the camp and cool evenings the presence of mosquitoes are very rare. Nkuringo Gorilla Camp has become the first accommodation venue in Uganda to achieve a carbon neutral position; it is now 100% carbon neutral. We chose to do our part by offsetting all our carbon emissions for the past 12 month period resulting from burning of fossil fuels and biomass in our business travel, heating, cooking and lighting. We strongly feel that this is the right thing to do and appreciate that an aggregate of such actions around the world will help in achieving the climate change mitigation targets.
The safari lodge is well known for its fully stocked bar along with a restaurant that serves both international and local cuisine.
Two beautifully hand-crafted en-suite Cottages and six Virunga Terrace Rooms with shared bathroom and eco-toilet facilities. Low voltage electric lighting and paraffin lanterns provide light at night. The camp has a small restaurant where visitors will enjoy tasty, wholesome meals which are freshly prepared. Food is purchased locally where possible to benefit the community. Parking for visitors with their own vehicles is provided on site.
Activities At The Lodge
In 2002, Joash Were who has been instrumental in start up of many companies within Kenya and Beyond thought of it wisely that it was time to start up something tourism related. He had worked at great places. Bearing in mind that all the progressive people talk “WE” and not I, he has brought together a great team who are professional in their own rights.
